English Bulldog Eye Problems – Symptoms And Treatment

English Bulldog Eye Problems

Introduction

As a devoted English Bulldog owner for over 15 years, I’ve experienced the joys and challenges of caring for these lovable, wrinkly companions.

One aspect of Bulldog ownership that often goes under the radar is their propensity for eye problems.

Today, I want to share my insights and experiences on this important topic, drawing from years of caring for my beloved Bulldog, Winston.

Understanding English Bulldog Eye Problems

The English Bulldog’s eyes are characterized by their large, round shape and prominent appearance within their wrinkled facial folds.

They possess a wide-eyed, expressive gaze that adds to their endearing charm. Bulldog eyes feature a dark, round iris surrounded by a white sclera, creating a striking contrast.

The eyelids are often hooded, and the surrounding skin folds contribute to their characteristic “sad” expression.

Should Know English Bulldog Eye Problems Symptoms

  1. Persistent squinting or blinking:

Bulldogs may squint or blink excessively if they are experiencing discomfort or pain in their eyes, which could indicate an underlying eye problem.

  1. Excessive tearing or watery eyes:

Increased tear production can be a sign of irritation, infection, or blocked tear ducts, requiring further investigation by a veterinarian.

  1. Redness or inflammation around the eyes:

Redness and inflammation can signal various eye conditions, including conjunctivitis or uveitis, requiring prompt attention to prevent complications.

  1. Rubbing or pawing at the eyes:

Bulldogs may rub or paw at their eyes if they feel itchiness or discomfort, potentially exacerbating existing issues or causing injury.

  1. Cloudiness or opacity in the cornea:

Cloudiness or opacity in the cornea may indicate the presence of cataracts, corneal ulcers, or other serious conditions affecting vision that require immediate veterinary evaluation.

French Bulldog Eye Allergies

  1. Swelling or bulging of the eyelids:

Swollen or bulging eyelids can result from allergies, infections, or more severe issues like orbital cellulitis, necessitating thorough examination by a veterinarian.

  1. Discharge from the eyes, which may be yellow or green:

Yellow or green discharge from the eyes may indicate bacterial or fungal infections, requiring prompt treatment to prevent further complications.

  1. Visible third eyelid (cherry eye) protruding from the corner of the eye:

Cherry eye occurs when the gland of the third eyelid prolapses, leading to a noticeable red mass in the corner of the eye that requires surgical correction to prevent long-term issues.

  1. Changes in pupil size or shape:

Uneven pupil size or shape can be indicative of neurological problems or eye trauma and warrants immediate veterinary attention to determine the underlying cause.

  1. Difficulty keeping the eyes fully open (lagophthalmos) or frequent eye closures:

Difficulty keeping the eyes fully open or frequent eye closures may suggest issues like facial nerve paralysis or pain, necessitating examination and treatment by a veterinarian to preserve vision and comfort.

Some Effective English Bulldog Eye Problems Treatments

  1. Cherry Eye Treatment

   – Surgical repositioning or removal of the prolapsed gland of the third eyelid to restore normal eye function and prevent recurrence.

  1. Entropion Correction

   – Surgical correction to adjust the eyelid position and prevent inward rolling, relieving discomfort and reducing the risk of corneal damage.

  1. Dry Eye Syndrome Management

   – Daily administration of artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to maintain adequate moisture and prevent corneal irritation.

   – Prescription medications such as cyclosporine or tacrolimus to stimulate tear production and reduce inflammation in cases of severe dry eye.

  1. Corneal Ulcer Treatment

   – Topical antibiotic eye drops or ointments to prevent bacterial infection and promote healing of the ulcerated cornea.

   – Pain management medications to alleviate discomfort and promote comfort during the healing process.

   – Protective measures such as an Elizabethan collar to prevent further trauma to the affected eye.

  1. Conjunctivitis Therapy

   – Topical antibiotics or anti-inflammatory eye drops to control bacterial or allergic conjunctivitis and reduce inflammation.

   – Warm compresses or eye rinses to soothe irritation and remove discharge from the eyes.

   – Identification and avoidance of potential allergens or irritants contributing to the conjunctivitis.

  1. Cataract Surgery

   – Surgical removal of the clouded lens and replacement with an artificial intraocular lens to restore vision in cases of significant cataract formation.

  1. Brachycephalic Ocular Syndrome Management

   – Environmental modifications to reduce exposure to potential irritants such as wind, dust, and debris.

   – Artificial tear supplementation and lubricating ointments to alleviate dry eye symptoms associated with incomplete eyelid closure (lagophthalmos).

   – Surgical correction of eyelid abnormalities or procedures to address anatomical factors contributing to ocular surface damage.
